The Nunatsiavut Government is completing an environmental review of the Strange Lake Rare Earth Mining Project, under the Nunatsiavut Environmental Protection Act. This review is done in collaboration with the provincial and federal government.
This project is led by Torngat Metals Ltd. (the Proponent). The project is a rare earth elements mining project in the Strange Lake deposit in Quebec, located 235 km northeast of Schefferville and 125 km west of Vale’s nickel-copper mine near Nain in Labrador. The project plans to extract mining material from an open pit, and between 2.5 to 6.0 million tonnes per year of crushed ore will be fed to the onsite beneficiation plant. The ore concentrate will be transported by road. This new road would be built to connect the mine site to a new container storage and handling facilities at the existing port of Vale’s nickel-copper mine in Anaktalak Bay on the eastern coast of Labrador. The total length of the access road is estimated at 160 km. Ore concentrate would be shipped by sea from Vale’s port to processing facilities in Quebec.
