The Nunatsiavut Government is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Herbert Jacque – a distinguished leader and community advocate – at his home in Makkovik on December 31. Mr. Jacque served as the long-time Mayor/AngajukKâk of Makkovik, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of community members and Nunatsiavut as a whole.

Mr. Jacque attended Fisheries College upon completing his formal education, returning home to Makkovik during the summers to work at the community’s fish plant or to work in the offshore fishery. He eventually became responsible for quality control at Torngat Fish Producers Co-op. From 1982 to 1991, he worked as an inspector with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He also dedicated his time to serving on the Board of Directors for Labrador Legal Services and the Torngat Regional Housing Association.

In 1996, Mr. Jacque was elected as a town councilor and later served as the Mayor of Makkovik. He was sworn in as the first AngajukKâk of Makkovik in the Nunatsiavut Assembly in October 2006, a position he held until September 2018.

“On behalf of the Nunatsiavut Government and Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Jacque family and the entire community of Makkovik during this difficult time,” says President Johannes Lampe. “Herb’s profound impact and dedication will forever be remembered, and his memory will be cherished within the hearts of those he touched.”
