Following is a statement from Health and Social Development Minister Roxanne Barbour in recognition of Foster Families Appreciation Month:
“October is National Foster Families Appreciation Month, and I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Nunatsiavut Government, to express my sincere appreciation to all foster parents in our five Labrador Inuit communities and Upper Lake Melville.
“This year’s theme, It Takes All of Us, carries an important message, especially for Inuit children who rely on their foster parents every day as a consistent source of support, care, and stability. While foster parents play an invaluable role in the lives of children and youth, I recognize that they cannot do this work alone. It truly takes a community to raise a child.
“Formal and informal supports for foster families are essential. These supports help ensure Inuit children remain connected to their communities, culture, and identity while receiving the care they need. When we support and care for our foster parents, we are also supporting and caring for our children.
“I want to acknowledge and praise all Labrador Inuit foster families who take on the significant responsibility of opening their homes and hearts to our children. I also recognize that foster families are part of a broader network of people who contribute to the well-being of children and youth. This year’s theme reminds us that It Takes All of Us to support foster families and recognize their important role. Social workers, birth families, teachers, health-care workers, extended family members, and community members all play a vital role in helping children and youth thrive. I encourage everyone who is able to play an active role in supporting foster families and the children in their care.
“To honour our foster parents, staff with the Department of Health and Social Development’s Caring for Our Children Project will be hosting private appreciation events, by invitation only, in each Labrador Inuit community and in Upper Lake Melville. These events are being delivered in partnership with the provincial Department of Social Supports and Well-Being.
“The Nunatsiavut Government remains committed to supporting and recruiting new Labrador Inuit foster families through the Caring for Our Children Project, a supportive service available in all Labrador Inuit communities and Upper Lake Melville.”
