The Nunatsiavut Government has been advised by the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer that the official list of candidates for the May 5 election for Ordinary Members of the Nunatsiavut Assembly has now been finalized.

As outlined in the Nunatsiavut Elections Act, if a constituency does not have at least one female candidate nominated at the close of nominations, the Returning Officer must notify the President and the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer. The President is then provided up to 48 hours to take reasonable steps to nominate a female candidate in each affected constituency. Following the close of nominations on April 1 at 2:00 p.m., no female candidates had been nominated in the constituencies of Hopedale, Makkovik, and Postville. In accordance with Section 33 of the Act, the required process was initiated.

The President has now completed all obligations under the Act. Despite taking all reasonable steps within the allotted timeframe, no eligible female candidates were identified who were willing to accept nomination in the affected constituencies.
