Nominations for the 2026 General Election for Ordinary Members of the Nunatsiavut Assembly closed yesterday, March 31, at 2:00 p.m. Under Section 33 of the Nunatsiavut Elections Act, if a constituency does not have at least one female candidate nominated at the close of nominations, the Returning Officer must immediately notify the President and the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer. The President is then given up to 48 hours to take reasonable steps to nominate a female candidate in each affected constituency.

As no female candidates were nominated in the constituencies of Hopedale, Makkovik and Postville, this procedure has been triggered. Once the President has fulfilled the obligations set out in the Nunatsiavut Elections Act, the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer will release the names of confirmed candidates.
