HMCS Margaret Brooke has a formal Northern Affiliation with the Nunatsiavut region, created in 2022 to build long-term relationships between the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Labrador Inuit. Because it’s an Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship, it regularly operates in Nunatsiavut waters, taking part in missions like Operation NANOOK, doing hydrographic surveys, visiting communities, and supporting sovereignty in the North.
The affiliation also includes cultural exchanges, school visits, and ceremonies—like the inaugural event in Hopedale—meant to strengthen ties and show respect for Inuit traditions while maintaining a steady naval presence in the region.

Project Details:
The Nunatsiavut Government (NG), in partnership with the Royal Canadian Navy, is looking to commission a Nunatsiavut artist to create a piece of art that will be transferred to the Hull of the HMCS Margaret Brooke. This large mural will symbolize the relationship between Nunatsiavut and the vessel HMCS Margaret Brooke, that operates in Nunatsiavut waters.
The successful artist will be expected to, in consultation with the NG and RCN, design and create a 2D piece of art that will be transferred to the Hull of the HMCS Margaret Brooke.
These general guidelines must be followed:
- Original 2D design must be either hand drawn or digitally created by the artist
- Animal theme relevant to Nunatsiavut wildlife
- Two toned design of darker colours
- moderate detail (too much detail will cause issues with the creation of a stencil)
- Design will be placed on the side of the ship in the location highlighted in the red box (4m x 4m)
- Digital designs preferred in Vector format
