Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe is extending sincere condolences to the families, friends, and communities of Rigolet and Nain following the passing of two respected Elders.
Nancy Ikkusek of Nain spent her life promoting and teaching Inuttitut. She was an Inuttitut teacher for many years at Jens Haven Memorial where she taught many students. Ms. Ikkusek was a Language Master who worked with adult student apprentices to teach Inuttitut. She was also a valued translator with the Nunatsiavut Government.
Garmel Rich of Rigolet was a master seagrass basket maker whose skills ensured the history and technique of the craft was not lost to time. Born in 1939, Ms. Rich began weaving grass at the age of seven and went on to exhibit her works worldwide. She was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Art Council’s Hall of Honour in 2012 in recognition of her lifetime contribution to the arts and cultural heritage in the province.
“Both Ms. Ikkusek and Ms. Rich proudly showcased their Inuit culture and language,” said President Lampe. “Their contributions to the perseverance of our language and art ensures that other Labrador Inuit can continue these cultural practises for generations to come.”
