The Nunatsiavut Government is completing an Environmental Review of the New Nain Airport Project, under the Nunatsiavut Environmental Protection Act. Led by the Nunatsiavut Government, this project would involve the construction of a new certified airport to replace the existing airstrip for Nain and the road to access it. The proposed new airport would be located southwest of the community, between Kauk Brook and Salt Water Pond. It would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The project description is available on the Nunatsiavut Government Environmental Review Registry (see links below). You can also request it by email from the proponent at colin.gilbride@nunatsiavut.com, and a paper copy can be requested from your Nunatsiavut Government Community Liaison Officer (CLO).
Currently, the Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Lands and Natural Resources is conducting public consultations to gather opinions of Labrador Inuit regarding the proposed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Guidelines. The guidelines are available on the Nunatsiavut Government Environmental Review Registry.
This Public Comment Period will commence on March 9, 2026. It will last for 60 days and end on May 8, 2026. Comments can be submitted to the CLOs at your Nunatsiavut Government community office or can be sent via email to environmentalreviews@nunatsiavut.com. Please note that comments received in writing will be made publicly available.
