October is National Foster Families Appreciation Month and the Nunatsiavut government would like to express gratitude to all foster parents in the five Labrador Inuit communities and Upper Lake Melville.

“This year’s theme, Centered on Family, Strengthened by Connections, is important as we recognize the important role our foster parents play in allowing Inuit children to remain connected to their family, community and culture,” said First Minister and (Acting) Minister of Health and Social Development, Melva Williams. “It is crucial for an Inuit child’s development to be immersed in their Inuit family, community, and culture; to have opportunities to develop a sense of pride and cultural identity. The Nunatsiavut Government commends all foster parents who create, encourage and take part in cultural opportunities with our children, and especially for foster parents in Nunatsiavut and Upper Lake Melville who play a crucial role in allowing our children to remain at home in our Inuit region and community.”

To honour foster parents, the Department of Health and Social Development’s Caring for our Children Project staff have private events planned (by invitation only) in each Labrador Inuit community and Upper Lake Melville, in partnership with the provincial Department of Families and Affordability.

The Nunatsiavut Government aims to support and recruit new Labrador Inuit foster families through the Caring for our Children Project, a supportive service available in the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area and Upper Lake Melville.
